Q: How do I know if I need to seek physical therapy for my pain?
A: Physical therapy can be very beneficial for a variety of diagnoses. Whether it be an acute injury like an ankle sprain or a chronic pain you may have had for several years such as back pain, therapy can be very advantageous to the healing process. Acute injuries respond very quickly to therapy because of the stage of healing and the bodies want to recover. Chronic pain & dysfunction coming from a variety of origins can be helped as well. With chronic pain there are usually more compensations and body systems involved which can lead to a slower healing process. However, with the combined efforts of your MD, nutritionist and therapist to find and target the primary causes, maximum healing can occur and an improved quality of life can be achieved. IMT (integrative manual therapy) as been shown in studies to expediate the process with acute & chronic cases and with an athlete wanting to be back on the field yesterday or a person that has tried everything with no relief this can be very helpful and life changing. Q: If my problem is non-orthopedic in nature will physical therapy help?
A: Absolutely! Like many healthcare professionals our profession has grown not only in ways to more effectively treat people but populations in which we treat. Several of the specialty populations apart of Fluidity Physical Therapy are non-orthopedic in nature and include: women & men’s health issues, gastrointestinal pain & dysfunction, neurological dysfunction. IMT along with functional & therapeutic exercises can give profound results with all these populations.
Q: Once completing a course of therapy will the problem come back and how do I know what I can go back to?
A: As you and your therapist continue to work together goals for full recovery or maximizing optimal function will be addressed. There is not a guarantee that pain & dysfunction will not return or completely go away secondary to several factors including but not limited to: past medical history, exercise, nutrition, stress. However, maintaining a HEP (home exercise program) along with being compliant with specific recommendations given by your therapist will significantly reduce your chances for reoccurrence. If there are particular activities you want to get back to these will also be addressed throughout your treatment sessions along with appropriate progressions and modifications. Part of FPT’s mission is to optimize function and prevent future dysfunction. Along with exercise, nutrition & stress management will be addressed with appropriate referrals as needed. At discharge you will have the tools and confidence to live a healthy life and create a more “fluid” you.
Q: How is Fluidity Physical Therapy different than other physical therapy practices?…Ultimately, am I going to get that much better there?
A: First and foremost, FPT’s one-on-one care will provide an environment that maximizes healing. It’s unique combination of integrative manual therapy, postural restoration & functional orthopedic exercises can give profound results in the most basic to complicated cases with sustainable results beyond what you thought was possible. You have an opportunity to receive some of the most up-to-date and effective care in the Hampton Roads area. From the time you walk in the door to when you leave, FPT will give you something to feel good about.
Q: How much truly does diet and exercise help?
A: Nutrition and exercise play a significant part in healing and overall wellness! The correlation between nutrition & exercise to risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, & HTN has been well documented. Healing time has also been shown to be reduced with those that eat better and exercise. Your response to therapy will rely largely on suggestions given by your therapist, nutritionist, and MD on exercise, nutrition, and stress management. Our focus at FPT is to treat you as a whole by addressing all areas of health and wellness that will provide optimal function and recovery.
Q: I don’t have time to eat right or exercise…is there still hope for me?
A: Our body is our machine and if we allow it to get run down our ability to carry-out all the things we want to do will be compromised. Even with the busiest schedule, you and your therapist can come up with easy ways to maintain health and quality of life. Whether it be creating a short, exercise program of 20 minutes and/or providing nutrition referrals on simple ways to modify diet, an exercise program and good diet can be achieved. FPT also works closely with MDs specializing in nutrition and supplement/vitamin intake that may be appropriate for you. No matter the person, prevention is key. Incorporating good eating habits, an exercise program and stress management techniques is vital in maintaining a healthier you.
